Honor's Convocation 2006

The chemistry department held it's third annual Awards Convocation and Reception on April 7th, 2006. As part of Honor's Week festivities at UA, the department recognized it's students who have excelled in the classroom and research labs.

As part of the ceremony, Clifton Watkins, a graduate student who spent much of 2005 serving in Iraq, presented the department with a US flag that was flown in Iraq on September 11, 2005. Clifton also gave a short slide show of his experiences in Iraq.

Dr. Joe Thrasher announced that an anonymous gift had allowed the establishment of the Anthony J. Arduengo, III, Lectureship in Physical Organic Chemistry. This generous gift, which honors the accomplishments of Dr. Anthony Arduengo, Saxson Professor of Chemistry, will bring world renowned researchers in physical organic chemistry to UA to present scientific lectures.

The main focus of the day was, of course, on the outstanding students who were being honored for their accomplishments. A number of undergraduate and graduate students were recognized for their excellence in the classroom and/or research.
